Thinking about an early retirement and considering houseboats as a way to embrace a minimalist lifestyle. I don't have much experience with boating and plan to mostly live docked. What maintenance issues should I be prepared for? How do pets usually adjust to this kind of living? Is it a more cost-effective option compared to renting? Also, how do HVAC and plumbing systems generally operate on houseboats?

@livingonliquid I have a houseboat, a lot of people think houseboat living is a cheap alternative, but honestly, that's not always the case.
You have to factor in marina fees, which can be expensive, plus insurance, utilities, and the high cost of marine parts and labor.
Your pets will adjust, but it really depends on their personality. Dogs and cats can get used to it, but you have to be ready to take them ashore for every single bathroom break, no matter the weather.
It's a big adjustment for them, too
