houseboat dreams or total headache tell me before i dive in

I'm considering getting a houseboat, fixing it up, and possibly taking on the Great Loop. I live on a river near the Gulf Coast of Florida, I'm pretty handy with tools, and I'm nearing retirement.

Are we crazy for even thinking about this, has anyone done it, was it amazing or a total mess, what should I keep in mind?

I'd love to hear your stories, tips, and any warnings you have, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

I know a lot of people that made the great loop and had the time of their lives. Considering your location, you have an excellent advantage to take on this adventure, but it's not all great news. Some houseboats won't handle the rougher waves, so it's going to impact the jounery a lot. Finally, training it crucial. The great loop isn't a walk in the park, so don't treat it like one.

Not crazy at all, actually it sounds like a dream setup, especially with your location and skills, if you plan smart and pick the right vessel youre gonna enjoy it, A houseboat can work, it's gotta have the seaworthiness for the bigger open water legs like the gulf crossing and great lakes.

Man, this sounds like a retirement adventure of a lifetime! I've known a few who've done it, and the consensus is that it's an incredible adventure, but definitely a lot of work. Expect mechanical issues, even on a well-prepped boat. Things break, and you'll be glad for your handy skills! Budget generously for repairs, dockage, and fuel. Also, consider the draft of your houseboat for some of the shallower Loop sections, and be prepared for varying levels of solitude and community depending on where you are. My biggest advice would be to thoroughly survey any houseboat you're considering, focusing on the hull and engine!
